This course is intended for all healthcare professionals who want to acquire theoretical and practical skills in musculoskeletal ultrasound. The course covers the theoretical foundations of ultrasound and practical exercises focused on examination methods according to the protocols of the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR).
The course focuses on the practical examination of muscles, nerves, ligaments, and bone surfaces using diagnostic ultrasound. In addition to static images, we will also engage in dynamic testing, allowing us to observe changes in bodily structures during movement. There will be enough equipment available so that participants can work in small groups, alternating in the roles of examiner, examinee, and supervisor.
Participants will become familiar with:
- The physical principles of ultrasound,
- General capabilities of functional ultrasound diagnostics,
- Basic artifacts necessary for ultrasound evaluation,
- Interpretation of ultrasound records,
- Utilization of ultrasound diagnostics by physiotherapists, rehabilitation, and sports physicians.
In the practical part, they will try:
- Examination of major joints according to ESSR protocol,
- Ultrasound evaluation of muscles, tendons, ligaments, peripheral nerves, and bone surfaces,
- Dynamic testing of selected anatomical structures,
- Objective measurement of clinically significant distances and areas,
- Side-by-side comparison of clinically significant areas,
- Basics of working with color Doppler imaging,
- Interpretation of findings for clinical practice.
Instructor: Mgr. Stanislav Macháč, Ph.D.
The instructor is one of the few specialists in the Czech Republic who focuses on diagnosing the musculoskeletal system using ultrasound from a physiotherapist’s perspective. He gained his initial experience from colleagues in the Netherlands and the USA, where ultrasound is widely used in rehabilitation. In the Czech Republic, he organizes international courses on musculoskeletal ultrasound for physiotherapists, sports, and rehabilitation physicians. He also teaches the basics of musculoskeletal ultrasound at the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and at various workshops in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
